Why Gamification in eLearning is Important (and How to Implement It)

Let’s face it: Learning at work isn’t always fun. Unfortunately, this usually results in training that bores your team to tears…and bored employees don’t learn anything. But wait! What if we told you there was a better way to learn?

Death by PowerPoint

Gamification is changing how adults learn and has quickly become an essential piece of the eLearning puzzle. It’s an engaging way of learning that draws participants in with gameplay elements such as earning points, competing with others, and being rewarded. These incentives enhance understanding and increase the likelihood of long-term retention.

Take Duolingo, for example. Learning a new language seems complicated, but Duolingo makes it more manageable. They use gamification to help people learn new languages for free and boast over 300 million customers in their user base. You don’t get those kinds of results from a PowerPoint slideshow.

Why Gamification?

Humans innately love being rewarded. Rewards cause the brain to release dopamine (the chemical in our bodies that makes us feel good). Whether through a points system, beating a level, or a ding signaling a completed task, dopamine rewards the brain as a treat. Plus, it dramatically affects mood and memory, so if we learn as it’s released, we are scientifically more likely to remember it.

In short, gamification in eLearning stimulates the brain during training and gives employees a lasting incentive to learn continuously. And a culture of continuous learning is good for any business.

Please Welcome Your Knights in Shining Armor

At MMG, we transform your training materials into entertaining and educational experiences through interactive gamification that engages your audience. Not to brag, but gamification is our thing, so let’s get you playing.

Is It Work If It Feels Like Play?

Historically, our customers have struggled with engaging content, resulting in trainees feeling disconnected. They need storytelling miracles, so we created an easy-to-follow game to show, not tell, how gamification in eLearning can improve content delivery.

75% of today’s workforce are millennials who grew up in the golden age of computer video games, so designing gamified elements that hit that nostalgic vibe was the direction we knew we had to take. Thus, “Mountivation,” (Motivation + Mountain, get it?) was born.

Our content team wrote quiz questions, and our designers implemented gamification concepts such as a compelling in-game rewards system in what felt like a sentimental computer game. This system was critical to a successful outcome as studies show that active learners retain 93.5% of learned information, compared to only 79% for passive learners.

Everything was combined into a playable game where users select a “climber” from a list of cute characters. Gamification increases team happiness by 88%, and an amusing character system offers users a personalized investment. The learner, via their chosen character, then progresses up Mount MMG, leveling up and gaining points as they search through caves, cross rivers, and start fires.
